Fly fishing for trout in the famous rivers of the New Zealand’s Central North Island with Chris, a fly fishing guide with many years of experience

Taupo, New Zealand, has become a world renowned fishery since the introduction of rainbow and brown trout in 1897. These fish have thrived in the cool, clean rivers that flow into Lake Taupo, and are now the reason why many local and overseas anglers return year after year.

Chris is a professional fly fishing and hunting guide with over 25 years years experience guiding in the Taupo area.

Winter Fly Fishing 4WD

Fly Fishing in the Taupo rivers over winter is world-famous and some of the best fly fishing for wild trout in the world.

Go out with Chris on a full day over winter and you will catch between 6 & 20 trout of around 3 1/2 lbs with the odd one 5 lbs and over.

Whether you are a beginner or experienced angler on a half-day or a full day you will catch fish regardless of your ability.

10's of thousands of large wild Rainbow and Brown trout migrate from Lake Taupo into the rivers and streams to spawn.  "Tongariro River", "Tauranga-Taupo" and "Hinemaiaia River" are just a few we fish on a daily basis.

What a morning! Cannot thank Chris enough for a great morning on a fast and furious river. I'd not fly fished for 30 years but Chris was patience personified and had me a beautiful rainbow within the first 20 minutes. And what a fight in glorious, wild surroundings. Eight fish all told, fantastic. Good on you Chris and thanks again.

Chris took me fishing for the first time over 10 years ago. Since then we have done over 60 days of fishing on the streams and rivers around Taupo – solo, and also with my kids and my business clients. Chris adapts each experience to the skill level of the customers he is guiding. His experience, patience, and caring approach make for an exceptional day whether you are new to fly fishing or already a skilled angler. We always catch fish and Chris is always enthusiastic about each strike as I am.

Chris, Thanks for the great fishing. You had just the right mix of teacher, guide and excellent host. We look forward to returning to the river with you.

Thank you so much for a wonderful morning of fly fishing this morning Chris! We can’t stop talking about it. You really gave 120% to ensure we both experienced “Trout Satisfaction”. The river was so pretty and casting was strangely relaxing and very enjoyable – though I can still here fish laughter… Will post pics when we get home to Australia on Sunday. THANK YOU again big time!!!!

Summer Fly Fishing 4WD

Summer is a fantastic time to fish in Taupo’s backcountry rivers, streams and  high country lakes.  There are over 40 rivers and streams within an hour’s drive of Taupo township. Lots of variety! We fly fish to sighted rainbow and brown trout in deep crystal clear pools with large dry flies and small weighted nymphs. Some of the most exciting, is fishing to these large trout with a cicada pattern. Cicada’s fall on the water between late November and the end of March and are an absolute delicacy to large New Zealand trout.

Raft Fishing

Raft fishing is a great way to access the hard to reach upper wilderness area of the Tongariro and other world famous rivers. These places have a lot less fishing pressure and get some amazing dry fly and nymph fishing to sighted rainbow and brown trout.

Heli Fishing

Some of New Zealand’s very best fly fishing is in the remote mountain ranges of the Central North Island. The helicopter is by far the best way of reaching these backcountry rivers. These pristine crystal clear rivers and streams are unspoiled and rarely fished.  Here, the trout can often make it to trophy size. The breathtaking scenery, exciting dry fly fishing and thrill of the helicopter ride make for an amazing experience you will never forget. Overnighting is a great way to get two amazing days of heli fishing for the price of one.We have access to a number of private huts and some unbelievable fly fishing for both rainbow and brown trout . By staying overnight we get to fish two different beats of river. One below the hut and one above. This water is always rested for at least 5 to 7 days to give the very best fishing for our guests.
